Boron, and the Borax Mines
2006 August 17, Thursday
Boron: the
best little town we passed through. Amazingly
beautiful and run down. They have a little historical museum
with fascinating historical notes alongside display cases celebrating
this or that relatively-current local eccentric character. This,
across the street from the espresso cafe which didn't know how to
work their espresso machine, and next to the space museum.
(Every small town needs a space museum, don't you think? They're a
few hours from Edwards Air Force Base, and the Mojave, so I guess
a test pilot or two has wandered through there.)
And, not to be missed: the visitor center at the borax mines. Amazing,
amazing. Huge open pit mine to view, and exhibits of many essential
uses of borax. Oh yes.
